Marjane satrapi
Satrapi was born in 1969 in Iran and attended the the Lycée
Français in Tehran. She’s a French
author, graphic novelist, illustrator, and director. She earned a Masters Degree in Visual
Communication after returning to Iran.
She married an Iranian man at 21 and divorced three years later. The author became popular after her comics
were published in France and the U.S. where they won several awards. Satrapi co-wrote and co-directed the animated
film version of Persepolis which
debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in ’07.
The film was nominated for an Academy Award in ’08.
TIME included the first part of Perspolis in its "Best Comics of
2003" and described it as "sometimes funny and sometimes sad but
always sincere and revealing. Kristin Anderson of The Oxonian Review of Books from Oxford University wrote, "While
Persepolis’ feistiness and creativity pay tribute as much to Satrapi herself as
to contemporary Iran, if her aim is to humanize her homeland, this amiable,
sardonic and very candid memoir couldn’t do a better job."
Satrapi is currently continuing her career in animation and film-making in France.
