Kate's Review:
These graphic novels are exceptional. The format is creative and engaging while the content is witty and nothing less than brilliant. Persepolis 1&2 contain a lot of historical content that might be difficult to understand without a basic understanding of Iranian government but nothing that can't be solved with a brief lesson on the Iranian regime. Also a KWL chart would be useful while reading a book like this.
Jeanne's Review:
I give it two thumbs up for teaching. There is limited strong language and very little objectionable content, so it's easy on that perspective. Kate is right in that the hardest part of the novel is learning the background of the Iranian conflict, but even without having a firm grasp on it, I was ok reading it the first time around. Obviously, the point of the book is to open people's eyes about the history as well as the Iranian perspective on an historical topic that American people especially need to know about (because our government played a big part in it). It's an inspiring, eye-opening, smart, funny, touching, and easy-to-read book on a topic that is hard to talk about. Completely worth the extra leg-work to research behind it, and hopefully this site will help get anyone started on that history.
